Some Recent Projects

Sylvan Consulting Ecologists is available for plant and soil survey work during the field season and for literature surveys and mapping work throughout the year. Educational walks and talks in local woodlands are also possible throughout the year. The following is a list of previous projects:

Coordinating the national review of forest policy for the Heritage Council

Editing of FAO sustainable livelihoods report on forest use among rural dwellers in Afghanistan, Iran, Kyrgyzstan and Turkey.

Facilitation of collaborative management plan, Ballyannan Wood, Cork.

Biodiversity assessment of Curragh Chase Forest Park in Limerick.

Forest assessment in southern Slovakia.

Creating management plans for native woodland restoration and conservation, under the auspices of the Native Woodland Scheme.

Leading field trips for ecologists and foresters on native woodland management. Leading walks for the public, organised by groups such as Galway Naturalists' Field Club and Crann

Surveying Irish people in three counties on connections between childhood experiences and adult attitudes towards forests and nature.

Inventorying the vascular plants and soils in an old woodland site returned to mixed forest after clearfell of a pure conifer crop.

Monitoring woodland development and recovery after herbicide use in private woodland in the midlands.

Carrying out a pilot survey of all semi-natural woodlands in western County Offaly, for Dúchas, the Heritage Service.

Assessing forest structure and developing forest and recreation management plan for community-managed woodlands in County Mayo and County Longford, Ireland.

Surveying rural residents in County Galway regarding their attitudes towards woodlands, forest, and environmental issues in general.

Editing the report consisting of independent evaluations of the People's Millennium Forests. Surveying the plants and the attitudes of people in forests used for recreation around Galway City.
